Skunks are wild animals which are never friendly. You cannot keep them as pet animals. The baby skunk case differs as compared to the adult skunk. If you find a baby skunk all alone somewhere, this means it might be wandering here and there for some help.
Reasons for the baby skunk roaming here and there:
The baby skunk's mother might have died in any road accident and hence has been killed. Dead skunks may have been hit with the car and such cases cannot be ignored.
Another reason might be that the mother skunk must have been trapped and relocated to some other area as it was disturbing the people around it. The nest of the skunk was discovered after the skunk was relocated from that area.
Always give importance to such matters, where you see the baby skunk without the mother skunk. The mother skunk can never leave the baby skunk along unless and until it goes in search of food. The mother skunk will never go miles away from its babies as the babies are too young and immature to live on their own.
If the baby skunk is seen playing, walking and digging in the ground or lawn, avoid coming in contact with that, because the mother will be somewhere near and looking at its activities.
When do baby skunks come out? Day or Night?
The baby skunks are never out during the day as they are also nocturnal animals. The babies also come out during the night time. Observe the activities of the baby skunk and only go near the baby skunk when the mother is not around. If the baby comes to know about your presence, then it can hide in its den and won’t come out again so easily.
What to do if you come across a baby skunk?
Once the baby is out, place some box or a basket in halfway of your distance from the den. This activity will ensure that the baby skunk is safe and it won’t lead to any insecurity of the baby skunk. Do not give any sort of feed to the babies, just call the animal control and hand them over the caught baby skunk.
Lastly, if you do not have any other option, then you can try to handle the baby skunks on your own and give them to the animal control people on your own.
